“If you intend to study in specialized fields of dentistry, you should have information about the academic degree in dentistry. Dentistry is generally a field within the natural sciences in universities, which takes about 6 years and 12 semesters to complete. The first 2 years of study focus on basic courses, which are referred to as the basic sciences period.” <\/p>\n

“Usually, after 2 years, students must take an exam called the basic sciences exam. Those who pass this exam can enter the clinical phase. The following 4 years, approximately 3 to 3.5 years, consist of practical training, and the last 6 months are mostly spent on the thesis and related tasks in the Iranian system.” <\/p>\n

“Our educational system in the field of dentistry follows the American system. There are two types of general dentistry degrees in the world: some of them are DDS, which stands for Doctor of Dental Surgery. The Iranian system also follows DDS, while some other countries use the BDS system, which stands for Bachelor of Dental Surgery. BDS is about one semester shorter than DDS, but it is accepted in many countries around the world.” <\/p>\n

“DDS in the Iranian medical system<\/a> is recognized as a dental surgeon. However, don’t forget that if you encounter the term ‘surgeon’ or ‘dentist,’ it does not refer to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon; in fact, it refers to a general dentist. BDS is not offered in Iran; in fact, it can be said that no dental school in Iran teaches BDS.” <\/p>\n

“When individuals enter different specialties, they must study for about 3 to 4 years, although the number of years may vary in some fields and universities. Only the oral and maxillofacial surgeon specialty lasts about 5 years. After completing this specialized program, individuals obtain the title of specialist in that field. In fact, it can be said that these individuals are both dental surgeons and have obtained academic expertise in a specific area.” <\/p>\n

“It is important to note that in Iran, we do not have specialized fields in implantology or cosmetic dentistry. Those who become specialists usually need to pass an exam called the specialty board exam to confirm their clinical qualifications. This exam is held annually by the Ministry of Health, and naturally, those who achieve high scores in the board exam have a better chance of becoming professors at reputable universities.” <\/p>\n
